Scam Alert: Group Using Local Fire Department Names to Solicit Money

According to a public notice from Jefferson Fire Chief Ron Wegner, a scam claiming to represent the City of Jefferson and Jefferson County volunteer firefighters is circulating in the area.

The notice indicates the scammers are using both mail and phone calls to solicit donations from a group called the Volunteer Firefighter Alliance. Chief Wegner says, “This group does not represent the Jefferson Fire Department or Jefferson County Fire Departments and does not have any permission to solicit under our organizations name,” in the notice.

Reports indicate the mailings ask businesses to buy ad space to support local volunteer fire departments and the calls ask individuals to give money to local departments. The Volunteer Firefighter Alliance does not have permission to use any local fire department names and will be receiving a letter from the Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association telling them to cease solicitation in the state of Wisconsin.

If you are interested in giving to your local fire departments, contact them directly. If you receive any of these solicitation scams, report them to local authorities. As with any solicitation for money, do your research on the organization before giving any money.
