Carfentanil has made its way into Dane County. Authorities say officials responded to a carfentanil overdose earlier this week in Middleton.
Officials with the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office reported three deaths due to the drug that is 5,000 times more potent than heroin earlier this month.
Carfentanil, known as an elephant and large animal tranquilizer, was the cause of five deaths in Minnesota in a 17-day period earlier this year and 174 overdoses in just six days in Cincinnati last August.
The DEA has issued a warning about the drug that is likely being mixed with heroin stating that carfentanil is 100 times stronger than fentanyl and 10,000 times more potent than morphine. Officials say the drug is so powerful that it can even be dangerous to touch without gloves.
