Announcing The Flashback Friday Schedule

Announcing The Flashback Friday Schedule

With the sports world coming to a halt, we here at 940 WFAW are trying to figure out creative ways to bring sports programming to our loyal listeners. After much deliberation we landed on Flashback Friday broadcasts! Every Friday, at 6pm, we will be re-airing sports broadcasts from our family of stations from the past year. Everything for high school football to UW – Whitewater women’s basketball, we’ve selected some of the best games of the year to re-air for your listening pleasure. Once we combed through what seems like countless games from this past season, we finally narrowed down a schedule of games. We are happy to announce the following games will be re-aired on 940 WFAW as part of our Flashback Friday special programming!

  • 3/27: Football – Lake Mills 24 v Onalaska 23 From 9/6/2019
    • The L-Cats jumped out to an early lead, but the Hilltoppers of Onalaska made a furious comeback in a non-conference matchup back in September. Instead of opting for a field goal late in the game, Lake Mills went for it on fourth down inside Onalaska territory. The Hilltoppers stifled the fourth down attempt and they took over just needing a field goal to win. Onalaska moved it to the red zone before attempting a 28-yard field goal with six seconds remaining in the game. The ball was snapped over the holder’s head and into the kicker’s arms, who heaved a prayer towards the end zone. The pass attempt came up short and the L-Cats held on for the 24-23 victory.
  • 4/3: Basketball – The Battle For The Paddle Jefferson 65 – Fort 60 (Boys) From 1/27/2020
    • In an emotional game at Premier Bank gymnasium, the Jefferson Eagles held on for a 65-60 victory over the Fort Atkinson Blackhawks in the annual Battle for the Paddle. Jefferson and Fort Atkinson gathered to gather to honor a Jefferson player, Kaden Johnson, who had passed away in a car accident along with his father just a few days prior. Fans of both teams wore Johnson’s favorite color blue, and for a night basketball brought a community together.
  • 4/10: Football – WIAA D4 Playoffs Round 1 Lakeside v Jefferson From 10/25/2019
    • A Division 4 Round 1 Playoff matchup features two local teams as the Lakeside Lutheran Warriors took on the Jefferson Eagles. The Warriors got out to an early lead after jumping all of Jefferson early. Although the two teams played a closer second half the Warriors held on for the victory behind 212 rushing yards from quarterback Matt Davis.
  • 4/17: Basketball – Lake Mills 68 – Martin Luther 65 (Boys) From 3/6/2020
    • In one of the best high school basketball games all year in the state of Wisconsin, Adam Moen hit a three-point heave at the buzzer to lift the Lake Mills L-Cats over the defending Division 3 State Champion Martin Luther Spartans. In a game that saw the L-Cats down by as many as 12, they fought back after Joey Immekus hit three free throws with 1.68 seconds remaining to tie the ball game at 65. Moen released the game-winner from 10 feet beyond the 3-point line with 0.6 seconds left and the ball fell through the hoop after banking off glass almost simultaneously with the clock hitting double zeros.
  • 4/24: Football – Jefferson 20 – McFarland 8 From 8/30/2019
    • Jeffrey Zeh ran for more than two hundred yards and three touchdowns in a incredible performance as the Jefferson Eagles came out victorious of the McFarland Spartans 20-8 in week two of the 2019 football season. Scoring was at a premium in this one but Jefferson did what they did most of the season, dominate the clock and dominate the run game en route to a Rock Valley Conference victory.
  • 5/1: Basketball – UWW Women 75 – St. Thomas (Minn) 69 From 12/30/2019
    • Playing at a neutral site at the JustAGame Fieldhouse in the Wisconsin Dells, the UW-Whitewater women’s basketball team wrapped up their non-conference play with a thrilling victory over #17 St. Thomas out of Minnesota. The win extended the Warhawks win streak to eight, as they dominated defensively and forced 23 turnovers. Whitewater got up by double digits, but the Tommies fought back to make it a close game in a matchup and win that signified a great season to come for the Warhawks.
  • 5/8: Basketball – Lakeside 53 – Lodi 56 (Boys) From 2/18/2020
    • Four players scored in double figures for Lakeside but it wasn’t enough as they came up short against Capitol North rival Lodi, 56-53 in a February matchup. The offense struggled in the first half only putting up 17 points, but they exploded in the second half for 37 points, but it just wasn’t enough to overcome the earlier deficit. Matt Davis and Ian Olszewski both scored 12 points for the Warriors. Carter Schneider and Collin Schultz added 11 and 10 points, respectively in the game.
  • 5/15: Basketball – UWW Men’s Basketball 65 – UW La Crosse 63 From 1/29/2020
    • The UW-Whitwater men’s basketball team went on the road and picked up a big victory in the final minutes over #16 UW – La Crosse. The Warhawks locked down defensively in the second half and Breontae Hunt recorded his first double-double of the season to help Whitewater get the victory. Sophomore Bailey Kale hit a jumper with 30 seconds remaining to give UWW the lead and the Warhawk blocked a buzzer-beater to seal the victory.
  • 5/22: Basketball – Lake Mills 54 – Wrightstown 62 (Girls) From 3/12/2020
    • In what would end up being one of the final state tournament games of the entire season, the Lake Mills L-Cats stellar season came up just short of a state title game birth as they fell to Wrightstown 62-54 in a Division 3 State Semi-Final matchup at the Resch Center in Green Bay. It was an interesting atmospohere in Green Bay, with the WIAA having announced that there would be limited attendance due to the COVID-19 outbreak; however the crowds and the teams made the most out of the situation. The lead went back and forth over an 8-minute stretch in the second half, but Wrightstown eventually pulled away. Lake Mills had to overcome injuries to two of the leading scorers, but came up just short in what turned out to be a great game.
  • 6/5: UWW Football 23 – Mary Hardin Baylor 7 From 12/7/2020
    • The No. 7 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team put together one of its most complete performances of the 2019 season win a 26-7 victory over defending champion No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor on the road. The Warhakws dominated the time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 43 minutes in the contest and piled up 358 yards of total offense, including 239 on the ground. The defense was stellar as it had been all season, limiting Mary Hardin-Baylor, which entered the game on a 27-game win streak, to 140 total yards, including minus-3 on the ground.
  • 6/12: UWW Football 35 – St. John’s 32 From 12/14/2020

The Johnnies returned the ensuing kickoff to their own 42-yard line, but senior linebacker Matt Anderson posted an interception on the first play from scrimmage. The win allowed the Warhawks to head to Stagg Bowl XLVII, the Division III national championship game, for the 10th time in the last 15 years where they would eventually come up short against North Central.
